While exploring the Trieste Karst, in the heart of the Karst plain, you come across this large, isolated Austro-Hungarian cemetery. It's heartbreaking to see hundreds of gravestones, each obviously corresponding to a person, buried in this almost forgotten place. This is the absurdity of war. It deserves a visit and a prayer.

A fortified settlement dating back to the Bronze Age, this hill fort is among the best preserved in the entire Karst. Surrounded by two imposing walls, still perfectly identifiable, you can still see some emplacements built during the First World War by the Austrian Imperial Army.
