The essential characteristic of such a "Christo Rei" depiction—which the statue found here, although dedicated not to Christ the King but to the Redeemer and therefore called "Christo Redentore," involuntarily reminds every viewer—is that Jesus is not shown on the cross or as the crucified one (although his outstretched arms suggest this from a distance), but Christ is the King, the victor over sin and death, who has overcome all the suffering in the world. It is the outstretched arms of the lovingly drawing Christ with which the divine Redeemer embraces the land and the people living there in blessing.

Marzamemi is a charming seaside village on the south-eastern coast of Sicily, famous for its historic tuna fishery and evocative atmosphere. The main square is surrounded by golden stone houses with many places where you can stop to taste one of the delicious typical dishes. The small port and the colorful boats that slowly sway on the crystalline sea give a romantic touch. At sunset, Marzamemi lights up with a unique magic, between sea scents and Mediterranean flavors.

Harnessing the power of moving water to drive a mill wheel is an ancient invention, documented as early as pre-Christian times. Thanks to such a design, a watercourse – natural or artificial – could easily replace human or animal muscle power, for example, to grind grain into corn. There are essentially two drive variants for watermills: Either the water simply hits the blades of the water wheel from below to set it in motion; or the water is guided above the wheel and falls onto the blades. This design utilizes natural gravity to achieve greater efficiency.

One of the most characteristic places in the whole of Italy, the island of Correnti represents its southernmost point when the low tide allows it to be easily reached from the beach of Portopalo di Capo Passero. Right at the end of the latter is a statue of Christ with open arms, reminiscent of the much larger one in Rio. In the background you can see the meeting of the Ionian and Mediterranean seas.

Be careful in the parking lot. Unfortunately, cars are often broken into here. Do not leave valuables behind and do not store bags in plain sight in the car.
