The Sanctuary of Santa Lucia is a Catholic place of worship with Baroque architecture, located on Via Santa Lucia in Santa Lucia, a hamlet of Medesano, in the province and diocese of Parma. It is the seat of a parish in the pastoral area of Pedemontana. HISTORY The original place of worship was built in the Middle Ages; the earliest evidence of its existence dates back to 1354, when the Ecclesia Sancte Lucie de Varano Marchionum was mentioned in the Ratio Decimarum of the diocese of Parma among the dependencies of the church of San Giorgio Martire of Varano dei Marchesi, within the jurisdiction of the parish of Fornovo. In 1565, the temple was rebuilt. On May 13, 1607, the church was solemnly consecrated by the Bishop of Fidenza, Giovanni Giorgio Linati, and two years later it was elevated to the status of an independent parish church. Between 1731 and 1794, the place of worship was completely rebuilt in Baroque style; the rectory was also built adjacent to it. On October 21, 1952, the church was elevated to the status of a diocesan sanctuary dedicated to the virgin and martyr Saint Lucy. Around 1960, the church underwent restoration work. It was built between the 12th and 13th centuries on the route of the Via Francigena in Romanesque style, dedicated to San Donnino and built on the point where, according to legend, the saint fell. The direction of the works and the sculptures were by Benedetto Antelami. The most valuable part is the facade, one of the most beautiful of the Emilian Romanesque style, where you can admire bas-reliefs and statues. The two largest are those of David and Ezekiel, respectively to the left and right of the main door.

The Pallavicino Castle of Varano De' Melegari stands on a sandstone rock, in a strategic position for the control of the Ceno valley, and represents an exceptional example of medieval defensive architecture: a fortress designed and built with the aim of being impregnable. Built at the dawn of the 11th century by the Pallavicino family, the manor owes its mainly 15th-century appearance to the expansion and strengthening interventions carried out by order of Galeazzo Visconti, but it differs from the other Parma castles of the time especially for the peculiar and ingenious defensive system of the entrance, equipped with three massive towers aligned on the same side and the gate inserted in a secluded position at the base of the central tower.
