Located at the entrance to Piazza Mercatale, the Ponte Mercatale has an ancient history. A medieval bridge that gave access to one of the largest squares in Europe of the time, originating from the bend of the Bisenzio river. Until the 1920s the bridge had characteristics of a classic, very narrow medieval bridge. Before the Second World War, around the 1930s, the ancient medieval bridge was strengthened by reinforced concrete by Pierluigi Nervi and widened, probably for the passage of the first cars, but few traces of the great engineer's work remain: the bridge it was blown up by the retreating Germans after the heavy Allied bombings in 1944 and was then rebuilt trying to recover the original medieval structure. Remains of the old medieval bridge under the current bridge. The Mercatale Bridge can be admired by taking a walk along the cycle path of the Bisenzio river. (SOURCE: Welcome2Prato)

The Mercatale bridge is located in Prato and is of medieval origin. It gave access to the homonymous square which at the time was one of the largest in Europe. Before the Second World War the bridge was enlarged and reinforced with concrete but in 1944 it was bombed and now has the original medieval structure.

Towards Vaiano it is not a mirage, it is only and only a great SHAME, it has been interrupted for years at Carraia. I ask why spend money and then leave an important work interrupted? To posterity!

Prato is the third largest city in central Italy and, in addition to the almost completely preserved city wall and the Cathedral of St. Stephen, has numerous other historical buildings. Nevertheless, the city is not one of the most visited tourist cities in Tuscany. This is primarily due to the fact that the city is an industrial location for textiles. As a result, a "China Town" has developed there. At least a quarter of the 200,000 inhabitants are Chinese. The often inhumane production conditions have recently given rise to much criticism.

The bridge itself is not particularly worth seeing. It was named after the important citizen of Prato, who lived there from 1335 to 1410. Datini was a successful businessman but is also known for his charitable contributions

Nice place with a lot of ambience. In particular, the old buildings on the bridge are worth seeing.

One of the most important bridges in Prato which connects the two banks of the Bisenzio (tributary of the Arno). Various cycle routes start from here: north towards Santa Lucia and Vaiano, south towards Mezzana and Campi Bisenzio.
