It was very moving for me to arrive here after a 5-day pilgrimage from Vienna. A magnificent building with a rich history, simply beautiful.

Is part of the R 13 cycle path. Only residents are allowed to drive cars. Wide path, along the stream, and shady. Also suitable for racing bikes.

Here in the center is the restaurant Vis-a-Vis. It's expensive, but you should give it a try.

The First Monk's Cell, Mariazell According to tradition, the founding of Mariazell is attributed to a Benedictine monk named Magnus, who was sent from his mother monastery of St. Lambrecht to minister to the shepherds in the area surrounding present-day Mariazell. His journey led him to a hilltop at the site where the pilgrimage basilica now stands. There, he placed a wooden statue of Mary on a tree stump and built a wooden cell over it, which served as his chapel and living quarters. Mary in the (monk's) cell thus gave this place its name. Soon, so the story goes, prayers were answered here, and Mariazell became a destination for many seeking help. The traditional founding year of 1157 cannot be definitively proven historically, but a papal document does point to this period. Mariazell Basilica Legend tells the following founding story: In 1157, Abbot Otker of the Benedictine monastery of St. Lambrecht sent a monk named Magnus to the Mariazell area, which belonged to the monastery. This monk was to provide pastoral care for the people living there. With the abbot's permission, he was allowed to take his linden wood statue of Mary with him on the long journey. On the evening of December 21st, a boulder blocked his path near his destination. Magnus prayed to the Virgin Mary for help, whereupon the rock split open, clearing the way. Upon reaching his destination, the monk placed the statue on a tree stump and began to build a "cell," which served as both a chapel and his own living quarters. "Mary in the Cell" gave the place its name. The statue of Mary became a famous image of grace, still venerated today as Magna Mater Austriae, the Great Mother of Austria. ...
