Scenic through the Valley of Pleasure

The Eckersmühlen lock was built between 1980 and 1985 as part of the construction of the Main-Danube Canal federal waterway and opened on June 15, 1991. It is located partly within the territory of the town of Roth, part of the municipality of Haimpfarrich, and the town of Hilpoltstein, part of the municipality of Heuberg, and is designed as an economy lock with three economy basins south of the lock basin. From the upstream water of the lock, water from the Eckersmühlen section can be fed into Lake Roth via a 300 m long tunnel. Downstream of the lock, the Kleine Roth is diverted beneath the canal in a 200 m long culvert, but can also discharge water from Lake Roth via an inlet structure if necessary.

The Main-Danube Canal leads to Lake Rothsee, where there are numerous restaurants. It's also a great place to cycle around.

The Gredl Railway once ran from Greding via Thalmässing and Heideck to Hilpoltstein. Today, cyclists travel along its former route. Several milestones and information boards along the scenic route provide insight into the railway's history. From Greding, follow the Gredl Cycle Path signs, past the Beaver Nature Trail, to Thalmässing. Continuing toward Steindl, cyclists pass the highest point of the route on the European Watershed: From here, the water flows south into the Black Sea and north into the North Sea. The reward for the climb is a magnificent view. The route continues through pine forests to Heideck before reaching the lowest point of the tour at the Schweizermühle (Swiss Mill). From here, it's not far to the castle town of Hilpoltstein. Tip: Just 1.5 km from Hilpoltstein, Lake Rothsee invites you to swim and enjoy water sports.
