The birth of the town is linked more to a legend that has been handed down for centuries than to historical information. The legend tells of a pirate brigantine, from which Bergantino, the name of the town, which sailed the waters of the Po and which ran aground at this point gave birth to the new community. It is more likely that, since the river was a place of passage, there was a community dedicated to banditry activities from which to trace the brigands who may have given the community its name.
