The Etruscan Tagliata is, in reality, a work of Roman engineering dating back to the Republican period. It is an artificial passage dug into the rock, designed to prevent the silting of the port of Cosa, through a system of counter-currents coming from the sea and the emissary canal of Lake Burano. This extraordinary achievement became necessary when the Spacco della Regina, a large natural fissure in the promontory above with the same function, became impassable due to a landslide.
