The Church of Santo Stefano lies hidden in the narrow streets of Sanremo's old town and is one of the city's quieter historical churches. With its simple exterior, it blends unobtrusively into the medieval quarter, while inside, a peaceful, warm atmosphere prevails. For centuries, the church served as a place of prayer for the residents of the old town. Those who enter discover a contemplative contrast to the lively coastal life.

I have to admit: I completely missed it at first. But running right through the middle of Sanremo's main shopping street – from the Teatro Ariston towards the Casino – is a ribbon of plaques with annual plaques listing the winners of the Sanremo Festival each year.

Waiting for the sunset

The Teatro Ariston is the cultural heart of Sanremo and inextricably linked to the renowned Sanremo Music Festival, which has drawn millions of spectators annually since 1977. During this time, the city is immersed in the world of Italian music. But even outside of the festival season, the Ariston remains vibrant: concerts, theatrical performances, film screenings, and shows fill its program. Thus, the theater is not only a stage for national stars but also a central cultural hub in Sanremo year-round.

The old town of Pigna is the historical heart of Sanremo and resembles a labyrinth of stone. Narrow streets, steep staircases, and arched passageways spiral up the hill. Hidden among old houses are small squares, chapels, and surprising views of the sea. Laundry lines strung across the paths and the aromas wafting from kitchens lend the neighborhood a vibrant, everyday atmosphere.

The medieval village was destroyed by an earthquake in 1887 and abandoned by its surviving inhabitants. In the 1960s, the area was resettled by artists.
