With nine miles of city walls, four towers and crenellated walls and, all around, a forest for hunting, Mesola Castle is one of the 19 Delights of the Este family, that is, one of their prestigious luxury homes. The castle, used as a home for hunting trips in the woods that surrounds it, was built at the behest of Alfonso II d'Este between 1578 and 1583... La Delizia, which has a square base and four imposing crenellated towers at its corners, is surrounded by porticoed buildings and was owned by the Este family until 1771. Today it has instead become the property of the Province of Ferrara. (Source: https://castellodimesola.it/ )

History The first mention of Ro occurs in a bull of Pope Martin II of 944. The document was published by Muratori, who doubts its reliability. The parish church in the course of various events of disputes was destroyed. In 1774, based on a design, it seems, by the arch. Antonio Foschini, the current church was elevated, with sober and elegant lines. The bell tower dates back to 1882, as can be read in documents conserved in the parish archive. In 1818, by decree of Pope Pius VII, the parish of Ro, together with Zocca, Guarda Ferrarese, Cornacervina and Rero passed from the diocese of Adria to that of Ferrara. Ro obtained its own municipal autonomy in 1908, separating from the Municipality of Copparo for the law. of the Hon. Melli n. 752.

8월 30, 2022, Po Riverbank Cycle Path
The beauty of cycling on an embankment closed to traffic. The track is very long and connects Ferrara with Goro (about 90km in total). Attention only in periods of intense heat, there are NO fountains along the entire route, but you have to look for them in the places that cross each other. I recommend looking carefully at the map and identifying the refueling points before leaving, in order to avoid "running out of water" ...

Four imposing crenellated towers, mighty walls, large windows make the Castle a structure halfway between a fortress and a luxury residence or Delizia, protected in the sixteenth century by nine miles of walls and surrounded by a forest for hunting, the Boscone della Mesola . According to the hypothesis of some historians, this future Renaissance city had to oppose the power of Venice on the Adriatic: an ambitious project that needed time and heirs that Alfonso II was unable to have. In fact, in 1598 the Papal State returned to the possession of the Duchy of Ferrara and consequently also of Mesola.

Mesola Castle is one of the 19 prestigious residences (called delights) of the Este. It is located in the municipality of Mesola in Piazza Umberto I. Built between 1578 and 1583 at the behest of Alfonso II d'Este, by Giovan Battista Aleotti on a project by Marc'Antonio Pasi, known as Il Montagnana, it was used by the Este family as a dwelling during hunting trips in the adjacent Mesola wood. The delight has a square-plan architectural layout with four square crenellated towers at the corners, surrounded by arcaded buildings. It remained the property of the Este family until 1771. Various changes of ownership followed until 1952 when it passed under the control of the Ente Delta Padano and is now owned by the Province of Ferrara. The castle houses the Mesola Forest and Deer Museum on the second floor. On the main floor there is a permanent exhibition that traces the stages of the Este dream that, at the end of the sixteenth century, was crowned with the construction of this mighty castle, surrounded by walls for 12 miles and overlooking the natural harbor of the abbot so much tell the Venetians that Mesola was more like an attempt to build a new port city. The elegant setting mixes with the majesty of the rooms with frescoed ceilings and the visit enriched by interesting multimedia reproductions. On the ground floor inside the majestic hall the symbols of the characters who have made the history of the castle from the Este house to the Papal State. (source: Wikipedia)
