For people who are not so deeply Christian, it is a place that you cannot miss. It is definitely worth looking at this building, what an impressive architecture and great church painting, simply amazing.

The sanctuary of LORETO, official name: "Santuario Basilica Pontificia della Santa Casa di Loreto", is one of the great European Marian pilgrimage sites, together with "Lourdes" in the French Pyrenees and "Fatima" in Portugal. Unlike the two places mentioned, however, Loreto is not known for apparitions of the Mother of God. Here, pilgrims can show something very tangible: Mary's childhood home in Nazareth (Israel). Her parents - not mentioned by name in the biblical writings of the New Testament - are mentioned in apocryphal traditions: Saint ANNA and Saint JOACHIM are thus the grandparents of Jesus Christ (their common memorial day in the calendar of saints is July 26). When the time of the Christian kingdoms in the Holy Land came to an end towards the end of the 13th century, crusaders probably dismantled the venerated building in Nazareth and brought it to Europe. But this very sober assumption is contradicted by a much more interesting legend: According to it, four angels carried out the translation and flew the house over the Mediterranean.

The Bastion of Porta Marina, otherwise called Torrione Piccolo, represents the eastern defensive bastion of the Renaissance wall circuit of Loreto.

It is the legend that makes up the church's special treasure. It is a small house - the “Santa Casa” - that stands behind the altar: “This place is very important for those attending Mass because it is the house where Mary was born. Tradition says that the house was carried here by angels. And in fact the house has no foundation of its own. This proves the story is true."

The Holy House in Loreto was initially built with a small church. In 1468, with the participation of the most important Italian architects and artists, the construction of today's cross-shaped domed basilica began in post-Gothic and Renaissance styles. Pope Paul II, who is said to have been miraculously healed as a cardinal in Loreto in 1464, personally supported the construction. The church was completed with the representative facade in 1587.
