The certain evidence of the construction of the Norman Swabian castle of Mesagne dates back to the beginning of the 11th century, when, with the Norman reconquest of Puglia, Roberto d'Altavilla known as Guiscardo erected a castrum to defend the city (1062-1063). The term castrum was synonymous not only with "fortified place", but also with "jurisdictional, military, economic, religious center...".

Inside the Torre Guaceto nature reserve there is the sandy beach of Penna Grossa, the only beach in the reserve. It can be accessed from the Penna Grossa road which leads to the free beach. Excellent for a stop and relaxation.

San Vito dei Normanni is a city in northern Salento dating back to the Norman period, with a great historical, artistic and cultural heritage. In fact, there are numerous baroque churches, rock crypts and museums, as well as the 12th century Dentice di Frasso Castle around which the town center developed.
