The certain evidence of the construction of the Norman Swabian castle of Mesagne dates back to the beginning of the 11th century, when, with the Norman reconquest of Puglia, Roberto d'Altavilla known as Guiscardo erected a castrum to defend the city (1062-1063). The term castrum was synonymous not only with "fortified place", but also with "jurisdictional, military, economic, religious center...".

The Mother Church of Mesagne, dedicated to All Saints, located in the heart of the historic center, was built between 1649 and 1660 and constitutes one of the most representative monuments of Baroque art.

In the past, the Menhir was part of a triptych of monoliths scattered throughout the Campi Salentina area. The third Menhir was represented by the Candide Menhir, which disappeared in the 1990s and was never found again. Some historians, in order to identify the three Menhirs, associated the names of the three Magi with them, giving the monoliths a decidedly mystical aura.

Campi Salentina is located in a depression of the plain of Lecce, a position that has made the area particularly rich in water and therefore ideal for different types of crops. Like other towns in the area, the origins of Campi Salentina are lost in the Bronze Age and since then the center has always been inhabited.
