On opposite hills from the Saint Atanasius church, the small chapel overlooks the small town of Udovo. A steep set of stairs lead up to the chapel from here, while a road climbs more gently up from the back side a few hundred yards to the east.

The long tunnel is interrupted briefly for bridging a narrow canyon. Worth stopping for a brief walk on a scenic trail to a good rock climbing site. Excellent bilingual information panel at the trailhead.

Best personal service in town, great coffee, delicious pastries. Inside and outside seating to enjoy the local street life, right off the main road downtown. Ask for 'Tassos', particularly if you're a biker!

The monument on the square reminds of the Macedonian Struggle of 1904-1908, aimed at liberating Macedonia from the collapsing Ottoman Empire and uniting it with Greece; several Polykastrins fought against Bulgarian detachments of the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization (IMRO) and Turkish Armies. Finally Polykastro and the area was captured by the Greek Army during the First Balkan War in 1912. Most of its Bulgarian population was expelled to Bulgaria.
