Beautiful old town

The church has been known as the Church of Santa Maria Assunta since 1203. The church changed its name to Sant'Agostino in 1555, when the Augustinian friars came to Sansepolcro. The church's current appearance is the result of an architectural renovation carried out between 1771 and 1785 based on a design by the architect Vincenzo Righi da Camerino.

Originally dedicated to Saint James, it was renamed "of the Good Jesus" from 1509 onwards. The Baroque-style church features three altars decorated with 17th-century stucco. The façade portal is framed by a round-arched molding that encloses the entrance door and the eye above it.

A picturesque village that is definitely worth a stop, it comes alive during the renowned Polenta festival which takes place in October.

Monterchi is an Italian municipality of 1,716 inhabitants in the province of Arezzo, in the upper Tiber Valley. From 1927 to 1939 it was part of the province of Perugia, in Umbria, before returning to Arezzo following protests from the population. The town is particularly known for the Madonna del Parto, the famous fresco by Piero della Francesca painted between 1455 and 1465 in honor of his mother, Romana di Perino da Monterchi, originally from the area. The fresco, originally intended for the Chapel of Santa Maria di Momentana, is currently preserved in the Museum of the Madonna del Parto by Piero della Francesca.
