The Hahnheimer Bruch nature reserve is part of the bird sanctuary 6014-402, which stretches along the Selztal from Hahnheim to Ingelheim. It is therefore part of the EU-wide network of protected areas for the conservation of endangered or typical habitats and species, Natura 2000.

By the way: The body of water was first mentioned in documents in 764 as super fluuium Salusiam. Since no salt extraction has been proven on the Selz, the name is probably derived from the ancient Celtic word *salā for "dirt" or Old High German salo "dark" and refers to the color of the water.

The Hahnheimer Bruch nature reserve is located in the districts of Alzey-Worms and Mainz-Bingen in Rhineland-Palatinate. The 50.34 hectare area, which was declared a nature reserve in 1990, stretches between the local community of Udenheim in the west and the local community of Hahnheim in the southeast. The L 432 state road runs not far to the east and north, and the A 63 runs to the west. The Selz is a 61 km long, southern and left tributary of the Rhine and one of the main waterways in Rhenish Hesse. In the 18th century, the mill was the Würschweiler Mahlmühl and belonged to the Würschweiler Abbey (near Homburg in Saarland). In 1795, the mill and adjacent fields were purchased by the Darmstadt family. In 1812, the family tore down the old mill and built a new one on the property.
