After the death of Blessed Ugolino da Fiegni, a Franciscan hermit of the fourteenth century, his body was buried here and the church changed its name and became a destination for popular devotion.

The Sanctuary of Beato Ugolino, located on a promontory in Fiegni, is what remains of an ancient Benedictine monastic complex built in Romanesque style in the 12th century. In the central nave of the Sanctuary, it is possible to admire a series of paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries where traits from the life of Blessed Ugolino are recognizable. The fresco in the apse dates back to the early 1600s and represents the Coronation of the Virgin Mary.
