The road that connects Montefano and Filottrano offers a suggestive view of a landscape characterized by gentle slopes, vineyards and cultivated fields. The term “ Rancia ” is probably a corruption of the word grancia , or granary , from the French grange, borrowed from the Latin granica. Built as a fortified farm in the mid-11th century, in the Rancia district, on the plain located to the left of the Chienti river, the Castello della Rancia was initially a sort of tower house with autonomous structures for the defense of agricultural products. The name of the town has origins that date back to the Greek-Sicilian divinity Trea-Jana, venerated in the ancient Roman town of Trea. This city, which became a municipality in the mid-1st century BC. after having been a prefecture since 268 BC. with the conquest of Piceno, it extended into ancient Rome along the Via Prolaquense, one kilometer west of the modern city, currently occupied by the Sanctuary of the Santissimo Crocifisso. The original parish church of the sanctuary was built on the remains of the temple of Isis. The sanctuary houses a fifteenth-century crucifix considered miraculous, attributed according to tradition to an angel.
