This tower is part of the city's old medieval fortifications. It can be reached either by a fairly good (but fairly straight) dirt road from the east side, or by the paved Via Tur d'Amun and a short dirt section. Behind the tower, archaeological excavations have uncovered the ancient structures of the defensive complex (the excavation site is currently closed for construction [August 2025]). The view of Bardonecchia and the surrounding mountains is stunning.

The interesting exhibition would be even better if you understood Italian. It is still worth it because you are guided through the entire fortress and can explore it.

Tallest military fort in Europe. The climb is long and tiring and very crowded in the months of July-August but once at the top every effort is rewarded

The fortress in the clouds. An incredible building in an incredible place. The ascent by MTB is (was) feasible by pedaling to the French border but then the mule track becomes in bad condition at times and it was necessary to push. A lot of effort but worth it...

The Lenlon fort is located at an altitude of 2,508 meters about three kilometers from the Oliva fort that dominates by 250 meters. To defend this fort, it was decided between 1890 and 1893 to fortify higher, the Lenlon crest with a line of batteries, a powder magazine under rock and rubble masonry work, in the form of a crenelated tower. It can be reached via the Clarée valley or the Col du Granon on foot and by mountain bike.

By extension and armament it can be considered the largest fortified work of the late nineteenth century in the Cottian Alps. It is worth a small detour to visit the museum, open from June to October at varying times and days, it is advisable to check them on the site in advance

Until 1947 Mont Chaberton was in Italy, located in the municipality of Cesana Torinese. In 1883 Italy joined the Triple Alliance and started strengthening its defences against France. Between 1898 and 1910 Italian troops built an artillery battery on the summit that pointed towards France, in particular at the town of Briançon, and the pass to Italy over the Col de Montgenèvre. A road was built to the summit from the village of Fénils in the Susa Valley by soldiers and engineers led by Major Engineer Luigi Pollari Maglietta. They flattened the summit by about 6 metres to provide a surface for the eight towers. Their height of 12 metres was designed to overcome the highest snowfall recorded. Each emplacement was manned by seven men, who were protected by a relatively lightly armoured dome because the battery was thought to be out of reach of conventional artillery. Eight 149mm guns were mounted in the individual masonry towers. See Wikipedia for more details...amazing the history!!!

The construction of the fort at the top of Mont Chaberton began in 1892. The idea was then for the Italian army to strengthen its defense system against France. Nicknamed then the "Fort of the Clouds", it was at that time the highest fort in the world. Its position is extremely strategic, and almost unbeatable: it is located on a ridge line, at more than 3,130 meters above sea level. The fort became French in 1947, along with Mont Chaberton. Today, only ruins remain, which are truly impressive!

Mount Chaberton culminates at 3,131 meters above sea level. It offers a beautiful panorama over the valley of the Petite Durance. You will find several orientation tables there to identify the surrounding peaks. Like Mont Thabor, Chaberton became French in 1947. By moving the border to the entrance to the village of Clavière, the Treaty of Paris allowed France to annex the summit.
