We are on the Novara hills. This is the name commonly used to identify the hilly area of the province of Novara. Located north of the capital, in the central part of the province, it is bordered by the Sesia rivers to the west and the Ticino rivers to the east and borders the Vergante to the north. The altitude is between 190 and 470 m above sea level.

9월 5, 2023, Madonnina di Bergamina Memorial
The partisans of the "Volante Loss" brigade, active throughout the Novara area and Valsesia between 1943 and 1945, had their hideouts and bases on the Novara Hills. The Bergamina farmhouse, which stands alone, was a particularly frequented and safe place for them. and hidden in a depression near the Strona. In support of the victims of the war and in thanks for the freedom and peace regained, the statue of the Madonnina was erected in the weeks immediately following April 25, 1945, sculpted in Candoglia marble by the sculptor Malerba of the Fabbrica del Duomo of Milan. The image was solemnly inaugurated on the first Sunday of August 1945. For reasons of defense of men and products, the parish territory therefore saw the flourishing of castles and fortifications, a strong point of a civil and social nature, where the effective exercise of local power took place. Here the network of fortifications of the parish territory was organized by the Counts of Biandrate for strategic reasons and for better control over the territory, crops, products and men.

It was also an artery of the "via Francisca" (what we would call today "Francigena") which, after skirting the Barengo hill, reached Proh, and then continued towards Novara or towards Biandrate and Vercelli.

Proh was "caput plebs" until 1132, the year in which the transfer to Camodeia, today's Castellazzo Novarese, took place. With a certain probability the relevant territories coincided with the borders of the latter: Camodeia, Briona, Orre, Barengo, Sillavengo, Mandello Vitta, Proh and Agnellengo. The parish church was located in a strategic position and was crossed by the "biandrina road", which allowed internal communication within the possessions of the Counts of Biandrate

The fortress was seized by the Ducal Chamber of Milan together with the family possessions (including Castello di Vaprio). The family then managed to get the castle back in 1653 thanks to Manfredi's niece who had married the Marquis Pozzo D'Annone. The castle remained the property of the Pozzo D'Annone family until 1864, when they sold it to the Baron and General of Sabaudia Paolo Solari, diplomat and aide to Vittorio Emanuele II. In 1867 Solaroli was awarded the title of Marquis of Briona by King Vittorio Emanuele II. Relics belonging to Paolo Solaroli are visible in the Castle.

.In 1449 the destiny of Briona was set in Melegnano: Francesco Sforza, set out to conquer the duchy of Milan, to repay his debt to Giovanni Tornielli who had been fighting at his side for two years, granted him "castrum and locum Brione" as a fief with all power to administer justice and collect the financial proceeds due to the administration of the State. In 1486, Tornielli wanted to live in Briona with his son Melchiorre and therefore decided to build, within the perimeter of the fortress, the fortress, one of the most evocative military buildings in the Novara area. Melchiorre's son, Manfredo sides with the French against Milan. His daughter Antonia Tornielli married Giovanni Battista Caccia known as "Cccetto" in 1597, who went to live in the fortress of Briona at least starting from 1598, guilty of many crimes and anti-Spanish activities, he was executed in Milan in 1609
