We actually planned to cross the mountain from here in mid-May and hike to Alagna Valsesia (highest point at about 2600m). From 2020m, it was impossible to go any further due to the snow! We had to turn around, hike back to Quarrazza, and take a rather inconvenient public transport route via Domodossola and Novara to roughly where we wanted to go (instead of 25km over the mountain, it was about 125km by car or about 6 hours by public transport). So carefully consider the time of year and what equipment you plan to use for this hike. It's extremely dangerous with regular hiking gear and definitely not possible if there's snow on the trail!

Top location to look forward to and enjoy. With a bit of luck, cows and goats will keep you company.

Great food, simple but clean accommodation, very nice hostess

The Alpe Baranca refuge is located in the green Baranca valley at 1600 m. Its position makes it an excellent stopping and overnight point on the GTA path and on the "Via Alpina" itinerary. For overnight stays it is always better to call 3478659385 or send an email for reservations. From the refuge you can also enjoy a beautiful panorama and you can observe roe deer, marmots and chamois.

Alpe Selle is a charming mountain village, mainly populated during the summer. The traditional stone houses, some of which have been restored, extend along the path, bearing witness to a past full of life and activity. Historically, this place was a strategic point for trade between regions and countries. Nearby, there is a shelter. During the month of August, a traditional festival is held to celebrate the local culture. Nearby it is possible to visit the ruins of Villa Aprilia, a historic villa built in 1908 which belonged to Vincenzo Lancia and is still owned by the Lancia family. After the armistice of 8 September 1943, the area around Lake Baranca became an escape route to Switzerland and the villa was used by the partisans as a base. In April 1944, the villa burned down during a fierce battle between partisans and fascists.
