San Ponzo Semola (hamlet of Ponte Nizza) is a village in the Oltrepò Pavese located on the left bank of the Staffora stream along the Voghera – Varzi “greenway” cycle/pedestrian path. The medieval portion of the town with its characteristic stone houses is located south of the town center at the foot of the small wooded valley of the Semola stream. San Ponzo was one of the railway stations on the Voghera-Varzi line, active between 1931 and 1966. In this timeless village stands the ancient church of San Ponzo, modified in 1400 without its medieval architectural features having been completely lost. Inside there are traces of frescoes and a stone baptismal font from 1161. Of note, the area of the Caves of San Ponzo and the Giaciglio del Santo can be reached with a short excursion on foot along the path that goes up to Guardamonte. Legend has it that in these caves in the third century AD. lived the holy hermit and martyr. Near the caves, the centuries-old "Grande Vecchio" tree of San Ponzo can be admired, although little reported.

Piazza Castello (or Piazza del Palazzo, but also Piazza Malaspina in the popular version accepted by Pellizza himself, today Piazza Quarto Stato), is the place where the painter, between 1891 and 1901, places the advance of the workers. The square was born towards the middle of the 19th century with the renovation of the stately building, commissioned by the new owners Malaspina, who created a new access on the western side. Giuseppe Pellizza painted The Fourth Estate between 1898 and 1901; the work was the fruit of a long creative journey inspired by the protest of a group of workers, for which he had farmers and artisans chosen from among his fellow villagers from Volpedo pose.

In Volpedo, the nineteenth-century physiognomy is easily recognizable and allows the visitor to follow an itinerary between art and landscape on the Pelzzino places. We therefore start from the Studio built by Pellizza in 1888, after having decided to live and work in his native country, while remaining in contact with the great international artistic currents. The atelier, which was for the artist a place of work but also of study and meeting with friends, when it was not possible for him to paint en plein air, is open to the public and presents itself as a precious container of Pellizza's memories. The painter's places come to life through the large-format reproductions of ten works scattered throughout the village and placed in selected points, in direct comparison with the landscape glimpses that inspired them. In this open-air museum, the continuous comparison between today and yesterday prompts recourse to the power of art, which gradually manifests itself along the way.

The name The toponym derives from the Latin vicus (village) and is attested in the X century. as vicopicolo, i.e. a small village, and in the sec. XII as Vicus Pecudis, village of herds (from dapecus, sheep, cattle).

To taste the typical local products and to relax, the Agriturismo Guardamonte and the Agriturismo Cal del Monte are available, respectively in Piedmont and Lombardy in the municipalities of Gremiasco and Cecima. Guardamonte can be reached both from Lombardy, following from Voghera to Varzi, going up from Bagnaria, and from Piedmont, following from Tortona to Fabbrica Curone, going up from Gremiasco or San Sebastiano Curone.

The Guardamonte area is geographically located on the southern slopes of Mount Vallassa (747 m), up to the watershed that its summit forms between the provinces of Alessandria and Pavia, between Valle Staffora and Val Curone, with a spectacular view which ranges up to the Apennines. The site is of historical / archaeological interest, with settlements starting from the Middle Neolithic (the first artificial terraces from which the name "Castelliere di Guardamonte" derives) up to the Roman era, being the area of considerable strategic importance (with military garrisons of late Republican age). There is no lack of naturalistic interest, the rocks preserve fossil remains of marine origin, in fact the sea was present here in prehistoric times. The crag south of Monte Vallassa is equipped for sport climbing and can be practiced all year round, there is no shortage of neighboring areas for bouldering. In nearby Ca del Monte, on the north-eastern side of the mountain, it is possible to practice paragliding by launching from the balcony overlooking the Curone Valley. Last but not least, this is one of the first spots frequented by local bikers and not only, with some dedicated trails, which feature artificial structures and in any case a trend and a fund perfected for MTB. They are all reachable with comfortable ascents mostly unpaved from the Staffora Valley, mainly on asphalt from Val Curone. The best known are Rock Side, which starts from the main rocky cliff with a purely rocky bottom and high slopes, and River Side, which begins between Guardamonte and Ca del Monte, with a more flowy course following the course of the Semola Torrent, to finish the Bidone. a real flow trail that from the Pic Nic area near the Caves of San Ponzo, above the village of San Ponzo Semola, descends towards the characteristic town built with the local rock.

Splendid Romanesque monument, particular for its simplicity and cleanliness of the architectural lines. It dates back to the 11th century, and is characterized by the mixed use of brick and stone. Inside, very suggestive and simple, wooden crucifix and crypt.

The parish church dedicated to Santa Maria represents a fine example of Romanesque art, dating back to the 11th century, located at the exit from Viguzzolo in the direction of Volpedo and Val Curone. Also known as "Sancta Maria in ripa padi" because a canal from the Curone stream passed nearby. Surrounded by a well-kept park, it can be visited thanks to the commitment of the volunteers of the Viguzzolese Cultural Association under the patronage of the Municipality of Viguzzolo (open from May to September, every Sunday with guided tours from 4 to 7 pm).
