A summit cross rises on Monte Retaia - although not at the highest point of the mountain, but in an impressive location. It rests on a brick foundation with a stepped, man-high base in which a niche protected by a grille is embedded. The cross itself is not made of wood, as is often the case, but of metal. The interior of the longitudinal and transverse beams (which are only indicated by the outlines) is stabilized by a series of x-shaped struts. Furthermore, there is a metal circle around the crossing that is somewhat reminiscent of a halo. However, the cross has no body.

Calvana is a mountain ridge between the Pistoiese-Pratese Apennines and the Mugello in the area between Prato and Calenzano. Partly quite barren place with shrubby vegetation in the hilly part and grassland areas with wooded sections towards the ridges. There are various access points, but the most popular places are the peaks of Poggio Castiglioni, the Retaia, Cantagrilli and Monte Maggiore (the highest peak is 916 m above sea level). Despite the wild environment with almost uninhabited hills-mountains, the Calvana is much appreciated by hikers, the paths are marked by the CAI and, for trekking lovers, it is really worth reaching the ridges to admire the spectacular panoramas that range over 180 degrees .

Another way to get to Pinone. Very quiet road through little village,finishing with steep switchback ramp between trees, quite spectacular even if you wont see much of landscape, initially you are dealing with olive trees and cipressi but the last part is forestry. the fresh tarmac is the cherry on the cake. i wont do in winter going down.
