A beautiful bike path. After a few kilometers of gentle uphill, you can soon be scootering for many kilometers downhill. Very welcome when your butt is sore after hundreds of kilometers. 🤣 Otherwise, it's a railway bike path - just straight ahead... it gets boring after a while. 😅

The Dothen village church is located in the Dothen district of the town of Schkölen in the Saale-Holzland district of Thuringia. It belongs to the Königshofen parish in the Eisenberg church district of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany. The church's undocumented origins are only evident in the Romanesque part of the church, near the apse and at the south entrance. A fire devastated the church in the 14th/15th centuries.

The present church was built in 1729 on the site of a chapel dedicated to Saint Wendelin. He is considered the patron saint of shepherds—a reference to the fact that the town owed its prosperity for centuries, among other things, to sheep farming. In 1891, the turret on the east gable was replaced by a church steeple. The organ was made by the Poppe company in Schleiz, but is only partially playable. The three choir windows, depicting Moses, Paul, and, in the center, Christ, were donated in 1908.

The first castle complex was built around 900 on the site of a former Slavic settlement. It probably served as an outpost of the royal palace of Dornburg. Renovations and extensions took place in the following centuries. The outer walls visible today, with their four towers, date from the 16th century.
