Dating back to the Malatesta era and still well preserved today, the village of San Clemente is one of the best destinations in the Romagna hinterland. The walls and bastions are clearly visible, enclosing the center of the village as they once did. Not far away is also Castelleale, commissioned in 1388 by Leale Malatesta, bishop of Rimini.

2월 25, 2024, Fiorenzuola di Focara
It is one of the four castles (together with Casteldimezzo, Gradara and Granarola) built between the 10th and 13th centuries, in order to constitute an organic defensive system for the control of the Siligata pass, in the border area between the Church of Ravenna and the Pesaro Church first, and then between the Malatestas of Rimini and those of Pesaro. The village, originally called Fiorenzuola, took on the specification of Focara in 1889, probably due to the presence in ancient times of fires that signaled the position to sailors, or due to the presence of "fornacelle" where bricks and terracotta were cooked (from the Romagna dialect fuchèr or fughèr, i.e. fire to cook bricks). The village of San Clemente dates back to the Malatesta era and its origins are still clearly visible today. The walls enclose, as in the past, the heart of the historic center and the complex known as Castelleale. It is one of the rare examples remaining in the Rimini area of a building that is both a large farm and a fortified villa, built in 1388 by Leale Malatesta, bishop of Rimini.

The construction of the castle took place by the family of Sigismondo Malatesta in the early 1300s and was disputed between the Malatesta and Montefeltro families in the battles for the acquisition of the territory. It was thus lost and reconquered five times, until Federico da Montefeltro finally conquered Tavoleto in 1458. Federico ordered the demolition of the castle and then rebuilt it under the work of the architect Francesco di Giorgio Martini who finished it before 1474. In 1631 it became the direct domain of the Papacy, but in 1885 it was donated to the Lawyer Petrangolini at the same time as the assignment of the title of count and the subjugation of the surrounding territories. It was subsequently sold to a private individual who transformed it into a restaurant in the more recent 1960s and renovated it according to the standards of those years. The current owners instead purchased it with the intention of bringing it back to its origins. Today it is home to receptions and ceremonies.

Following the hairpin bends along the panoramic road you arrive at Fiorenzuola di Focara, a medieval village with splendid views of the Adriatic Sea, in the Monte San Bartolo natural park. In the past it was known only as Fiorenzuola, but in 1889 Focara was added, probably due to the fires fired to direct those sailing by boat.

Definitely take sunscreen with you, large blanket or umbrella. Maybe something like a tent ⛺️ there are many tree trunks/sticks there to protect yourself, but it's not always effective

Once called Gaiola, Galliola and Gazoleto, Casteldimezzo assumed its current name in the 14th century, indicating an intermediate position between Gabicce and Fiorenzuola. Thanks to its easily defensible position and the presence of the nearby port of Vallugola, the castle was used as a residence for rustic relief by the Archbishops of Ravenna. Passed to the Malatesta family in 1356, it then became the property of the Sforza and Della Rovere families. Today only a few traces of the ancient medieval walls remain. Inside the Church of Saints Apollinare and Cristoforo, dating back to the year 1000 but rebuilt (the dedication indicates the distant origins of Ravenna), a fifteenth-century Crucifix attributed to the Venetians Antonio Bonvesin and Jacobello del Fiore is kept, found on the seashore inside a large chest wooden. According to tradition, the sculpture was the protagonist of a miraculous event: it was the year 1517 when as many as 7000 foreigners from beyond the mountains, in the pay of Lorenzo di Piero de' Medici, defeated by Francesco Maria I Della Rovere, menacingly approached the walls of Castrum Medi. but the feared and foreseeable looting of the town did not take place thanks to the grace granted by the Crucifix that came from the sea to the terrified population. The news relating to the discovery of the precious artifact is also curious: the inhabitants of Casteldimezzo and those of nearby Fiorenzuola, having sighted a chest lying on the coast at the foot of the promontory and wanting to seize its contents, ended up fighting until the oxen to which it was harnessed the load, tired of the prolonged quarrel, they decided to set off along the road to Casteldimezzo leaving the neighbors with a pinch of nose.
