Porta Metauro, also known as Porta San Pietro, is one of Gubbio's most evocative historic entrances, located along the eastern side of the medieval walls. The gate is famous not only for its solid stone structure and imposing arch, but above all for its ancient wooden doors, among the few remaining city gates. These doors, made of sturdy solid wood planks and reinforced with iron studs, directly tell the story of the city's medieval history, offering a rare example of original defensive architecture. Built during the 13th century, Porta Metauro was part of a complex defensive system that exploited the terrain's contours to protect Gubbio's eastern entrance. The ancient wooden doors allowed the gate to be closed and defended in the event of a siege, and their preservation to this day is a marvel of durability and maintenance.

Via della Cattedrale is a small and charming street in Gubbio, leading to the Cathedral of Saints Mariano and Giacomo along the slopes of Mount Ingino. It is characterized by stone buildings, arches, and simple portals that preserve the city's medieval atmosphere. The route marks the transition from the civic to the religious area, creating a gradual and solemn approach to the Cathedral complex. The slight change in elevation and the sudden opening of the final space accentuate the sense of anticipation. Along the way, glimpses of the valley and the rooftops of Gubbio are captured, in a continuous dialogue between architecture and landscape.

From the outside, this church doesn't seem particularly special, but it's definitely worth stepping inside. Both sides are decorated with paintings, and the coffered ceiling depicts various scenes from the Passion of Christ.

The Festa dei Ceri is one of the oldest events and takes place in Gubbio on May 15th every year and consists of the carriage of three candles crowned by statues of saints: Saint Ubaldo, Saint George and Saint Anthony the Abbot.
