Sacred place of San Francesco d'Assisi, silence and peace reign supreme, stupendous panorama. Absolutely worth seeing, you can get there by car but you can appreciate it much better by arriving there after a trek.

The city of 16,000 inhabitants on the upper Tiber is located in the far east of Tuscany. Sansepolcro was probably founded at the beginning of the 11th century. According to legend, two holy pilgrims, Arcanus and Aegidius, stopped in this valley on their return from the Holy Land and, by a divine sign, they decided to stay and build a small chapel to house the holy relics they had brought with them from Jerusalem , to keep. Sansepolcro Cathedral, officially a co-cathedral, has ancient origins, having been founded more than 1,000 years ago as a Benedictine abbey on the pilgrimage routes to preserve the aforementioned relic of the Holy Sepulchre.

The hermitage of Montecasale is one of the most important places linked to the life of Saint Francis. It was the Saint himself who founded the hermitage inside a pre-existing building donated to him by the bishop of Città di Castello. It is also said that the wooden statue of the Madonna with Child was brought by Francis himself, even if there is no certain evidence of this. Its current appearance dates back to the 16th century. Outside the convent are visible: the source of “Grappa l'Orso” where the three thieves drank; the fountain of San Francesco, according to some, created by himself; the Sasso Spicco, where it is said that Francis competed with a nightingale in singing the praises of God, and the little garden where, according to tradition, Francis tested the ability of obedience of two young men eager to become friars.

Tradition has it that the city was founded around the 10th century by two pilgrims returning from the Holy Land. To preserve the relics from the Holy Sepulchre, they built an oratory with an adjoining hospital for pilgrims. The town of Borgo San Sepolcro was born around these buildings, later transformed into Sansepolcro. The current appearance of the center is from the Renaissance period, parts of the city walls built by the Medici family are still present.

We are just below 900 m above sea level: the forest, the water (while it lasts...) and the stone dominate, the silence is magnificent. You need to travel a few kilometers (approximately 3.5) on boots or mountain bikes to reach Val di Canale starting from the town of La Montagna, partly on an easy dirt road then along a forest road that is at times quite steep and stony; it is not a too demanding route, certainly not much considering the beauty offered by the remains of Val di Canale! An excellent circular tour is the one that starts right from the mountain, goes up to Val di Canale, continues up to the La Spinella refuge and then descends on an easy dirt road towards Germagnano; from here I suggest the path (indicated but not really "well marked") which takes you back to the start and offers the beautiful ford of the Condotto ditch (which then becomes the Afra torrent), right below La Montagna. Gastronomic (and refreshment) options include the Da Vasco trattoria, the Calisti restaurant and the Fattoria di Germagnano. And a small "packed" breakfast in Val di Canale, trust me, it really suits us 😅

On the pilgrimage route lies the town of Monte Casale, a place full of memories of Saint Francis in the forests of Valtiberina. On the way over the Alpe della Luna, a small monastery was built by Camaldolese monks in 1192. The complex, set in the woods and between watercourses, included a hospital and a hospice whose mission was to accommodate hikers. The history of the hermitage of Montecasale took a new turn in 1213: it was donated to Saint Francis by the Bishop of Citta di Castello and became a place of utmost importance for Franciscan spirituality and tradition. The hermitage is now the result of a restoration in the Renaissance style. The complex still preserves the original layout, characteristic of the oldest Franciscan monasteries, with the series of small buildings related to the monastic functions. The oldest surviving work of art is a valuable multicolored wooden sculpture of the Madonna and Child, rescued from the ruins of the nearby castle and brought here by Saint Francis. However, this is not the only trace that reminds us of the saint's presence in this place: the stone on which he slept, a crucifix, three small urns with some relics, two skulls of the three thieves he converted - the whole hermitage is rich in memories of Saint Francis.

According to legend, Sansepolcro was founded by two pilgrim saints, Arcanus and Aegidius, who, returning from the Holy Land, stopped in this valley to build a small chapel to house the relics from Christ's tomb. Over the years, the cathedral dedicated to St. John and the place called “del Santo Sepilcro” (of the Holy Sepulchre) were built around this chapel. The Cathedral of Sansepolcro (also known as the Co-Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist) is the oldest and most important Catholic church in the city of Sansepolcro, formerly the cathedral of the diocese of the same name until 1986, when it became the co-cathedral of the new Diocese of Arezzo-Cortona -Sansepolcro became. It is an Italian national monument. In 2012, the thousandth anniversary of the basilica's founding was celebrated, using the oldest known documents from 1012. On Sunday, May 13, 2012, on the occasion of the thousandth anniversary of the founding of the Church, Pope Benedict XVI visited. the cathedral and paused in prayer before the icon of the Holy Face. To commemorate the visit of Pope Benedict XVI. On May 12, 2013, two marble inscriptions were placed, one in the Chapel of the Holy Face in the Cathedral Basilica, on the right wall and the other on the facade of the Bishop's Palace overlooking Piazza Torre di Berta. At the top of the hill that begins in Città di Castello and, on the other side from Apecchio, there is a bar, restaurant with excellent toilet facilities. It is to be avoided on Sundays because it is frequented by very noisy and dangerous motorcyclists who use the road as a circuit for their adrenaline-pumping experiences.
