The Third Tower known as the Montale Tower dates back to the late 13th century. It is the “smallest” in size, but it played a strategic role in defense: in fact, it is placed in the best position for lookout. It is a fortress with a pentagonal plan, restored several times over the centuries, most recently in 1935. The interior contains an 8-meter-deep dungeon known as the “bottom of the tower.” Around the Montale can be seen very old large boulders of rock, stacked in a primitive manner in the guise of walls. The section of wall leading from the Second Tower to the parking lot of the ancient quarry belongs to the remains of the second city wall built in the 13th century. The city of San Marino, in fact, was fortified by three sets of walls built at three different times and largely torn down to allow the city to expand. This tower is not open to the public for visits and can only be admired from the outside.

I was very impressed by the infrastructure of the city, it's something you have to see and it's on the mountain.

The third tower, known as the Montale Tower, dates back to the late 13th century. Although it is the "smallest" tower, it played a strategic role in defense: it is located in the best observation position. It is a fortress with a pentagonal plan, which has been restored several times over the centuries, most recently in 1935. Inside there is an 8-meter-deep dungeon called the "floor of the tower". Around the Montale you can see very old large boulders stacked in a primitive way in the shape of walls. This tower can only be visited from the outside.

The Torre del Montale is one of the three towers of San Marino, together with the Guaita and the Cesta. It was built in the 14th century and used as a watchtower during the wars against the Malatesta family, who ruled the surrounding area. The tower is located on the top of Monte Titano and is the smallest of the three towers

The construction of the castle took place by the family of Sigismondo Malatesta in the early 1300s and was disputed between the Malatesta and Montefeltro families in the battles for the acquisition of the territory. It was thus lost and reconquered five times, until Federico da Montefeltro finally conquered Tavoleto in 1458. Federico ordered the demolition of the castle and then rebuilt it under the work of the architect Francesco di Giorgio Martini who finished it before 1474. In 1631 it became the direct domain of the Papacy, but in 1885 it was donated to the Lawyer Petrangolini at the same time as the assignment of the title of count and the subjugation of the surrounding territories. It was subsequently sold to a private individual who transformed it into a restaurant in the more recent 1960s and renovated it according to the standards of those years. The current owners instead purchased it with the intention of bringing it back to its origins. Today it is home to receptions and ceremonies.

San Marino is considered the oldest republic in the world and is surrounded by Italy on its border. The old town is perched on a rocky ridge of Monte Titano. The location is extraordinarily spectacular. It is not for nothing that San Marino's old town was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Narrow streets, old houses, impressive buildings and of course the three striking towers decorate the old town.

San Marino (officially Republic of San Marino, Italian Repubblica di San Marino, nickname La Serenissima 'the Most Serene') is probably the oldest existing republic in the world with a history that, according to tradition, goes back to the year 301 with its founding by Saint Marinus goes back As an enclave, it is completely surrounded by Italy. San Marino is one of the six European dwarf states and, with a population of around 30,000 inhabitants and an area of around 60 km², it is the fifth smallest internationally recognized state in the world.
