Built in the 14th century by order of Enrico and Federico Chiaramonte due to its privileged location overlooking the sea, Alcamo Castle has an impregnable exterior, while its interior is elegant. It has a rhomboid layout with four towers—two square and two round—and a large internal courtyard. The castle's openings are Gothic-style mullioned windows with two and three lights. In the 19th century, the Castle of the Counts of Modica became the property of the Municipality of Alcamo. Today, it houses the Regional Wine Shop of Western Sicily. An impregnable fortress and prestigious residence of Enrico and Federico Chiaramonte, who likely built it between 1340 and 1350, the castle takes its name from the Counts who owned it from 1410 to 1812. With its sturdy structure, built on a rhomboidal plan, and four alternating towers—two cylindrical and two square—it protected the city and withstood violent attacks for centuries, including the infamous one by the Islamic pirate, Barbarossa. On the north facade, two original single-lancet windows remain, while in the internal courtyard, two double-lancet and three-lancet windows remain. The castle's grand staircase is made of red marble from the quarries of Mount Bonifato. Opposite the theater dedicated to the poet Cielo d'Alcamo, in the same square, the symbolic monument of the city of Alcamo, the Castle of the Counts of Modica, stands before the visitor. Spectacular views of Castellammare del Golfo and the entire coastline! Ideal as a stopover on a road bike tour along the SP63 or SP187. The climb is short but challenging – about 2km with a gradient of approximately 6–8%, but you'll be rewarded with a truly postcard-perfect view. Tip: It's best to start in the morning or late afternoon – the light is at its best and there's less traffic. Perfect for a quick drink and a photo break – there's plenty of room to stop safely. Caution: No shade and no water source – refill beforehand! The road surface is good, but watch out for loose stones on the descent.

Castellammare del Golfo has a very special appeal for cyclists. The winding roads, surrounded by rolling hills and overlooking the turquoise sea, offer both sporting challenges and great panoramas. In particular, the ride down to the port, where the old town and the impressive 9th century sea castle are located, gives an intense sense of history and authenticity. It is also interesting to note that this town supported Garibaldi in his mission to unify Italy, which adds an additional historical incentive to any stop here. Once down in the port, it is the perfect opportunity to take a break, perhaps in one of the cafes that line the charming promenade. Another highlight for cyclists are the varied routes that lead up the gently rising roads to viewpoints such as Monte Inici. From there you have a fabulous view of the entire gulf and the town. Despite the sometimes narrow and steep roads, the climb is definitely worth it, even if it can get a little hectic at times. For those who need a refreshment after a bike ride, the port is the ideal opportunity to stretch your legs and enjoy the atmosphere of the Sicilian coastal town.
