The church was perhaps built from the remains of the castle destroyed in 1291. A church was first documented in 1436. The church was temporarily Protestant and returned to Catholic ownership in 1587. Severe fire damage occurred in 1683 and 1745. In 1959/1960, the church was expanded by architect Robert Kramreiter. It was restored in 1963.

However, if you're just looking for a leisurely ride (e.g., with family), you should definitely take this (essentially) car-free road. Through the vineyards with a view of the reeds and the lake: a dream!

The church in Rust was originally a Protestant church. However, it was re-consecrated as a Catholic church in 1680 as part of the Counter-Reformation. Take the time to visit and look at the interior, it is well worth it.
