On the southwestern shore of Lake Garda, a few kilometers north of Desenzano del Garda, lies the small town of Padenghe sul Garda in the fertile Valtenesi region. Over several centuries, numerous castles and fortifications were built in this area, reflecting the fierce power struggle already underway for the wines and olive oils produced in the Valtenesi. The castle ruins, perched on a hill above Padenghe, represent the remains of a fortress built of rubble and fieldstones as early as the 10th century. Originally lacking corner towers, the approximately 70 by 38 meter structure, situated on the gently sloping side of a moraine hill facing Lake Garda, was protected by a ditch. It was probably only in the first half of the 14th century that two square wall towers and two corner towers were added to the curtain wall. The wall on the steeper southeastern side, reaching a height of about 9 meters, remained without towers. Like most of the Valtenesi villages, Moniga del Garda has its Castle, similar to the others in terms of plan and wall structures, but much better preserved. The reason for this good conservation lies in the fact that its function was not defensive, but as a refuge in particular situations of danger. The castle of Moniga del Garda, on the Brescia shore of Lake Garda, is located in the western part of the town, on a slight hill, not like other similar buildings, which are built on the edge of an escarpment, but on the road that connects some of the castles surrounding. Perhaps due to its non-strategic position it has never hosted the home of a Lord, which saved it from conquering assaults, preserving it from profound architectural transformations. The Legend of the Cross: Once upon a time there was a very aggressive wolf who lived on the Rocca di Manerba. The wolf was terrifying and no one dared come near him. Countless attempts have been made to capture the wolf but all in vain. At one point a price was put on the wolf's head. At that time, the people subsisted on agriculture and sheep breeding, so news of the financial reward for the capture of the wolf soon spread across the area. Three young men from Moniga, Raffa and Pieve Vecchia, were willing to take up the challenge. The first two brave men tried to catch the wolf with live bait and then with a large fishing net, but in both cases the enemy caught them. The two young men were driven off the cliff and fell into the water of the lake. At that point, two huge rocks rise out of the water, commemorating the sacrifice of the two challengers. The third candidate, a young farmer from the nearby village of Pieve Vecchia, took courage and climbed to the top of the cliff where the wolf inhabited a den overlooking the lake. During the ensuing fight, the young man protected himself with a large cross that he used as a shield. This cross is said to have scared the wolf so much that it kept recoiling until it fell off the cliff too and died. Today there is a large cross on the top (which is very nicely lit at night), in honor of that young man from Pieve Vecchia who gave the beautiful promontory back to the people of Manerba.
