Among the many beaches you can visit and experience during a vacation in Tuscany on the Etruscan Coast, the splendid Gulf of Baratti is undoubtedly worth a visit. With its distinctive horseshoe shape and dark, gleaming sand, the Gulf of Baratti is a popular destination for many tourists every year and a favorite among locals, who flock to the pine forest from the first long, warm spring days. Baratti's uniqueness lies precisely in the splendid and characteristic nature that surrounds it: the large meadow, known by locals as "il pratone," comes to life every spring amid the voices and laughter of young people who organize picnics and outdoor walks here. It reaches its peak in summer, when you can enjoy not only the crystal-clear blue sea but also the natural shade of its beautiful and famous maritime pines that reach almost to the beach.

Interesting fact: It was from here that both Giovanni da Verrazzano and Amerigo Vespucci set sail in the 16th century, crossing the Atlantic to reach the new continent. This was also the port where the fleet of the Knights of Santo Stefano, the religious order of chivalry founded by Cosimo de' Medici to counter the raids of the Barbary pirates who plagued the Mediterranean, was moored. Here, in a lavish ceremony, Maria de' Medici embarked to marry Henry IV, King of France. Galileo also came here to test how the telescope he had perfected could be used aboard a ship in rough seas, but an exceptional calm thwarted his attempt.

Tourists traveling the coast south of Livorno between the areas of Castel Boccale and Romito—particularly the area known as Calafuria—may notice, on the cliffs below the coastline, square-shaped pools carved into the rock at sea level or partially submerged, where adults and children can bathe freely and safely in the summer. Some pools are perfectly regular in shape and well-polished, even featuring steps for access; the larger ones, in particular, resemble actual swimming pools designed for swimmers. These are actually stone quarries dug as far back as Roman times—and, even before that, Etruscan times—to obtain the sandstone that abounds along the coast. Depending on the type (dark and smooth, pietra serena, or sand-colored, more porous), sandstone was used for different types of construction: roads, buildings, walls, sewers...
