The Chiesa di San Sisto was once home to Raphael's Sistine Madonna, commissioned by none other than Julius II to create an altarpiece for the church. Raphael painted his Sistine Madonna around 1513. The canvas hung in the Chiesa di San Sisto until 1754. In that year, it was sold to an art collector, after which the Sistine Madonna ended up in the Gemäldegalerie in Dresden, where you can still see it today.
