Ruse is a recommended destination. In any case, the term "little Vienna" is partly justified (I mean as a Viennese). You just have to mentally shut out various Soviet atrocities.

Cherven was the key town of Northeast Bulgaria in the 14th century. The town had a bishop and a boyar who ruled it. It was a center of crafts and trade. What has remind of it, are the ruins of the fortification walls of the inner town , of the boyar's palace , the bishop's church and of some of the houses in the main street. There were 13 churches in the town and many monasteries in the rocks around it. An imposing 12-meter high watchtower is almost fully preserved. The castle was ruined by the Ottoman raids and the town declinedafterwards. Archaeological finds from Cherven are kept at the National Museum of History and the National Museum of Archaeology, both in Sofia, as well asat the Regional Museum of History in Ruse.
