Stylistically inspired by Italian Baroque architecture with elements reminiscent of French classicism, it took more than four decades to complete this impressive building due to financial constraints during construction.

This fountain located on the cycleway leading through the village has freshwater located in the shade and there are several other small shops to load up on snacks and food.

Balsthal is a great starting point leading to 4 nice low level passes (Passwang, Schelten, Hauenstein and Binzberg via Gänsbrunnen). The village itself does offer several restaurants from inexpensive bistros to 3 star restaurants as well as several fountains to fill up your water bottles.

In the middle of nowhere in the district near Rickenbach on the climb to the Tüfelsschlucht you come across two metal heads. You could have put a bench or a tree in the grass triangle between the streets, but obviously someone here had a better idea. Strangely beautiful but slightly out of place, the sculptures could just as easily be set up in a community or church square or another public place with a little more footfall. A detour to the two heads is worth it just for the sake of discovering them.

The tower can be climbed from April 1 to October 31 for 3 francs per adult. From the top, you have a magnificent view of the old town, the Aare River, and the surrounding villages, as well as, of course, the Weissenstein, Solothurn's local mountain.
