This trough, which by no means primarily served as a means of powering horses, dates back to 1857 and served the Hermsdorf estate as its water supply until 1945. The high-quality drinking water flowed by gravity from the nearby "Wuppen" spring area into this trough via an underground wooden pipe. From 1945 to 1974, this drinking water supply was available to the residents of Hermsdorf by municipal decree. It was only in 1974, after the commissioning of the central drinking water supply from the Tettau waterworks, that it could be decommissioned. In 2000, the trough was incorporated into the open space design of the Hermsdorf village green as a historical relic.

Flour was actually still milled here until the 1940s. The Matzmühle has been a residential building for a long time. The water wheel was repaired by volunteers and is now running again
