The medieval village of Šmartno is one of the most beautiful villages in the central Brda region. Built on Roman foundations, it is now considered an architectural gem and cultural monument. Behind its walls, it leads back to the rich and picturesque stories of the past and reveals the charm of Brda hospitality. The village of Šmartno is located in the geographical center of Brda, with views stretching from Nanos in the east to the Carnic Alps in the northwest, and from the vast Friuli region to the Adriatic Sea. The village, surrounded by walls and fortified with defensive towers, was first mentioned in 1317. In the first half of the 16th century, a medieval fortress was built on the remains of a Roman outpost around the church. The village served as a border fortress until the mid-18th century, when the Venetian threat was over. The houses in the center are grouped around the Church of St. Martin, the largest parish church in Brda, after which the village was named. The church's bell tower was originally a fortress tower. The bell, featuring the motif of the Three Kings, dates from 1857. The Baroque church features three marble altars, one of which is particularly rich. The presbytery and the Stations of the Cross were painted by Tone Kralj.

A wonderful opportunity to compare the "now" with the "before." The now is the suspension bridge over the Soca River, accessible to cyclists and pedestrians. The before is the stone bridge of the single-track railway line. Both, as well as the emerald-green Soca River, are eye-catchers!

Nestled in an enchanting hilly landscape, it's well worth a visit. All around are many dirt roads and paths winding up and down through vineyards and hills. It frequently hosts cultural events and exhibitions.

The world's oldest stone arch railway bridge. This engineering masterpiece was built at the beginning of the last century, in 1905, as part of the famous Bohinj Railway line connecting Gorica with Jesenice. 1,960 m3 of stone in the form of 4,533 carved stone blocks were used for its construction. Rail traffic on the new line between Vienna and the port of Trieste began in 1906. The bridge was destroyed in World War I, but was rebuilt according to the original plans, so it still serves its original purpose today. The bridge in Solkan has been a listed monument since 1985.

This almost 50 kilometer long cycle path connects Gorizia, on the Italian-Slovenian border, to Kanal, in Slovenia, entering the Isonzo Valley. It is a cycle path in perfect condition, mostly separated from car traffic and with breathtaking views of the turquoise waters of the Isonzo river.

An area steeped in history due to the events of the Great War: its four peaks were among the theaters of the battles of the Isonzo, furthermore on 29 June 1916 the first ever gas attack was conducted by the Austro-Hungarian army on that front. From the top of the peaks you can enjoy a beautiful 360° view that ranges from the Friulian plain to nearby Slovenia up to the highest portion of the upper Adriatic. The area is dotted with paths and is ideal for hiking and cycling.
