The Passion Plays in Oberammergau have been performed every ten years since 1634, with a few exceptions. The next planned performance is in 2030, if the tradition continues. In 1633, the residents of Oberammergau vowed to perform a Passion Play every ten years if they were spared from the plague. The first performance took place in 1634. The plays were not performed in 1870 (the Franco-Prussian War) and during World War II. The planned performance in 2020 has also been postponed to 2022 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
