Super nice view on both sides. Unfortunately, there is no real bike path or footpath, so it is best to use the narrow strip to take photos without damage. 😉👍

The Redipuglia military shrine was completed in 1938. Ten years of work were needed to finish the work, which currently houses the bodies of 100,000 soldiers who died during the First World War. The name Redipuglia derives from the Slovenian 'sredij poljie', which means 'middle earth'.

The fortress was built by the Patriarchs of Aquileia in the Middle Ages on the ruins of late ancient structures. In 1409 it passed to the Counts of Gorizia and in 1420 to Venice, where it remained until 1797. During the Venetian domination it was reinforced again and elected as a stronghold of the defensive line of the eastern border. Partly destroyed by the war, the fortress was restored by the Superintendency between 1950 and 1955. Since 30 March 1970 it has been home to the Speleo-Paleontological Museum, in which over ten thousand historical-scientific finds are on display.

The Rocca di Monfalcone is a fortified building of medieval origin that stands on the first hills that border the city. Still considered the symbol of Monfalcone today, it was built by the Patriarchs of Aquileia on the ruins of late ancient structures. In 1409 it passed to the Counts of Gorizia and in 1420 to Venice, where it remained until 1797, the year of the fall of the Republic by Napoleon. During the Venetian domination it was reinforced and elected a stronghold of the defensive line of the eastern border (especially at the time of the Turkish incursions). The stone lion of St. Mark inserted in the wall of the tower (on the lintel of the access door) is a tangible reminder of that era. The lion visible today replaces the original which has been lost: it was sculpted in 1957 in the Venetian workshop of Romeo dell'Era and donated to the City of Monfalcone by the Municipality of Venice. Partly destroyed by the war, the fortress was restored by the Superintendency of Monuments between 1950 and 1955. From 1968 it was entrusted to the care of the Monfalconese Speleological Group "Amici del Fante" which, two years later, inaugurated a paleontological museum, in later transferred to the city center and replaced by the current speleological museum. From the outside, the square-plan keep is clearly distinguishable, surrounded by a circular defensive wall structure made up of three distinct parts: two concentric facings in blocks of karst stone (approaching three and a half meters thick), vault delimited by the remains of a pre-Roman castle. Between the keep and the wall there was a covered gallery and the rooms intended for the garrison, while two cistern-wells were dug in the courtyard, one of which drew from a rainwater tank. The keep has a division into three levels which house cramped rooms in order to guarantee total defence, even in the case of small militias. The internal masonry is made of dry limestone. The concrete elements, corresponding to the external perimeter of the walls, were built during the First World War to reinforce the posts. The paths of the trenches run around. From above the view extends over the city and the sea, from the side the view is protected by the karst reliefs.

The largest Italian shrine dedicated to the fallen of the First World War. Built in 1938 on the sites of the battles of the Isonzo according to the dictates of the work of historical revisionism and mythologization of the events of the Great War, it collects the bodies of 100,000 fallen on this front of the war, 60 thousand of whom are unknown. It houses the tomb of Emanuele Filiberto Duke of Aosta, Commander-in-Chief of the III Army.

A magnificent message in the midst of pristine karst nature. Above the Vipava Valley and the sea, on the edge of the Karst plateau, rises the Cerje viewpoint. Here the Peace Memorial was built, 25 meters high, which preserves precious historical and artistic treasures. The imposing building is set in the heart of a natural amphitheater from which panoramas open up in all directions: towards the Adriatic Sea, the Friuli plain, the Julian Alps and the Vipava Valley. The seven-storey monumental fortress tells Slovenian history: from the Freising Manuscripts, the oldest preserved Slovenian writings, to the crucial events of the Great War, fixed on canvas by the Slovenian painter Rudi Španzel with the title The Dance of Life and Death , or even the Slovenian Guernica, up to the period of the anti-fascist movement TIGR and the war for the independence of Slovenia. The viewing platform at the top of the building symbolizes the gaze into the future. On the 4th and 5th floors of the Peace Memorial, exhibitions of various established artists are regularly staged. A trip to Cerje is an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in the beautiful sights, culture, tranquility and peace.

An area steeped in history due to the events of the Great War: its four peaks were among the theaters of the battles of the Isonzo, furthermore on 29 June 1916 the first ever gas attack was conducted by the Austro-Hungarian army on that front. From the top of the peaks you can enjoy a beautiful 360° view that ranges from the Friulian plain to nearby Slovenia up to the highest portion of the upper Adriatic. The area is dotted with paths and is ideal for hiking and cycling.
