At the historic site of the Dolina dei Bersaglieri, we are immediately catapulted back in time, having to cross and follow trenches that lead to the small basin of the famous First Aid Post of the Great War, now an open-air war museum. The route is very easy, on paved and dirt roads, with very little elevation gain and a high level of interest. It's a shame about the very tall grass...

One of the best preserved trenches of the Great War, originally Austrian, it passed into Italian hands during the first battles of the Isonzo, then became a second line trench for the rest of the war until the defeat of Caporetto when the Italians retreated to the Piave.

Mount Cosici (Cosich)/Košnik is a marginal hill of the Doberdò del Lago/Doberdob Karst on which the first line of Austro-Hungarian resistance was based from June 1915 to August 1916, when Italian troops occupied it as part of the Sixth Battle of the Isonzo. During that abundant year it was bloodily attacked several times by the Italians (west and south sides), without success. The remains of the Austro-Hungarian fortifications, however, are largely surmounted by the vestiges of the trenches, shelters and artillery positions built by the Royal Italian Army after the occupation, between August 1916 and October 1917.
