He was laid to rest in the Kaiser/Zwicknagl family crypt next to his wife Marianne, née Zwicknagl, who died in 1984 and whom he married in 1957 in the Rott Monastery Church. The crypt is located at the lower entrance to the old section of the Rott Cemetery. Franz Josef Strauss is an honorary citizen of the municipality of Rott am Inn. The path leading from Bahnhofstraße to the monastery courtyard and on to the crypt is named after him.
