Piazza del Popolo is the main square of Cesena, located in the historic city centre. The square is home to the town hall, the Rocchetta di Piazza and the Fontana Masini, a fountain from the late 16th century. The square is an important location for public events and markets, which take place every Wednesday and Saturday. Historically, the square was laid out in its current form around 1400 by Andrea Malatesta. The square has had several names over the years, and was given its current name after World War II.

The canal is the showcase of Cesenatico, a showcase of lights and colors, where restaurants, shops and old colorful fishermen's houses dominate the picture. Leonardo designed the canal on behalf of Cesare Borgia and recorded a kind of "historical photo" of ancient Cesenatico in one of his legendary notebooks, the "Codex L". The Porto Canale is the main axis around which the historic center of Cesenatico revolves and on whose docks the social life and promenade of citizens and tourists still take place. The port, in its innermost part, still follows the lines drawn in 1502 by Leonardo Da Vinci, who was called by Cesare Borgia to propose improvements to the existing mooring. Along the harbor there are still important monuments and places

The origins of Cesena are lost in the 6th-5th century BC, a period in which the first Umbrian and Etruscan settlements in the area date back. Roman city and then free municipality in the early Middle Ages, at the end of the 14th century the city became a lordship with the Malatesta family and reached its splendor with the establishment of the Malatestiana Library. After the brief duchy of Cesare Borgia, of which the city was the capital, Cesena returned under the direct rule of the Papal State and saw two popes of Cesena origins. The Malatestiana Library is the first Civic Library in Italy, founded in 1452 by will of the Lord of Cesena Malatesta Novello, recognized in 2005 as "Memory of the World" by UNESCO, for the value of the architectural structure and for the codes preserved in it. Unique in the world, it has remained practically unchanged since its inauguration in 1454. Opposite the Sala del Nuti is the Piana Library, owned by Pope Pius VII, one of the three popes of Cesena; in it you can admire, among other things, 15 splendid choirs. Cesena also owes its Rocca Malatestiana to the Malatesta Lordship, one of the most impressive in Romagna which can be seen from its terraces, with the "court" and two central towers: the "male" and the "female". The visit to the route along the walkways inside the city walls, to the ancient prisons, to the exhibition of jousting weapons, to the Agricultural Museum is very suggestive. Tall, visible from every part of the city, the thousand-year-old Benedictine Abbey of Santa Maria del Monte is famous above all for the Basilica of the same name, which houses the important collection of ex-votos, among the richest in Europe, and for the Laboratory of restoration of the ancient book. ... A visit to Cesena cannot ignore a walk along the lively streets of the historic centre, from Piazza del Popolo, characterized by the Masini Fountain, a jewel of the Mannerist age, to Palazzo del Ridotto, dominated by the bronze statue of Pope Pius VI, from the Cathedral of S. Giovanni Battista, with the Chapel of the Madonna del Popolo and the Cathedral Museum, at the “Alessandro Bonci” Theatre, a true neoclassical jewel. Montiano, a natural balcony on the hills that dare to reach the sea, is rich in flavors and ancient vestiges. A legend has it that this village was founded by Roman slaves who, fleeing from the chains of forced labor, redeemed their freedom, finding a refuge and a new homeland here. Due to its strategic position, Montiano was over the centuries under the dominion of noble families, the most important of which were the Malatesta, and by the Holy See, amidst disputes that continued until the unification of Italy. ... The heart of the town is the ancient Rocca Malatesta which, with its shape, outlines the borders of the village, the ancient home of Giacomo Malatesta. (Source: https://ipercorsidelsavio.it/localita/montiano/ ) The fortress, whose first structures date back to the 9th century, was adapted into a rich residential residence by Giacomo Malatesta, lord of the county of Montiano since 1570. The building, which suffered numerous damages during the Second World War and was affected following various renovations, it is now home to a kindergarten and can be visited externally. Giacomo Malatesta was also responsible for the construction of an access gate to the village which, due to the restoration promoted in 1712 by Sigismondo Spada, is known as Arco degli Spada. Next to the Malatesta door is the deconsecrated church of S. Francesco, today a cultural centre... ... Just outside the village, on a hill from which you can enjoy a beautiful view, there is the Parco delle Rimembranze: following the long staircase that leads to the top of the hill you arrive at the War Memorial, erected in 1925 in memory of the people from Montiano who fell in the Great War. The Malatesta Fortress (late 16th century) which dominates the town of Montiano is now only partially open to visitors. Heart-shaped, it overlooks and fills the small village. From the outside, its high walls hide the elegance of the interior and give the building a corrupt and powerful air. At the time of its greatest splendor it had elegant crenellated walls, large rooms, precious frescoes, a church and a large garden. (Source: https://emiliaromagnaturismo.it/it/localita/montiano) Residence of the Malatesta family by the will of Carlo Felice, the most substantial part of its construction dates back to the sixteenth century, but the first walls almost certainly date back to the ninth century. Heavily compromised during the last war, it was partially demolished to avoid further dangerous collapses. Later some parts were rebuilt and the municipal kindergarten was housed there.
