Damhussøen is a large, artificial lake and is a tranquil escape for locals who enjoy, cycle and run along the flat, 3.5 kilometre gravel path. Historically used as a reservoir for Copenhagen’s water supply, the lake is now a protected nature area particularly popular for birdwatching.

A small crossing over the historic Vestvolden ramparts, offering a clear view of the old fortification line and the grassy embankments that once formed Copenhagen’s outer defence.

A former gunpowder magazine built as part of Copenhagen’s defensive system along the Vestvolden. Its thick earth-covered walls were designed to contain accidental explosions and protect nearby troops. Today the building stands as a quiet historical remnant of the city’s fortifications, surrounded by green embankments and woodland paths.

A former Cold War-era air-defence bunker built in the early 1950s — once the command centre for Copenhagen’s air defence — now transformed into a museum where you can wander through underground corridors and explore interactive installations about wartime history. Further north, there is a lake and relatively untouched nature, while further south, the area becomes more park-like until it merges into Damhusengen at Jyllingevej in Vanløse.

At the western end of the lake there is a large playground with seating, a drinking fountain, and public restrooms.

Beautiful lake with cycleways and pedestrian paths around it, perfect for walking or running. The lake can be smelly at times, but it's generally very pretty to look at and there's lots of birdlife to watch.
