The castle was born as a medieval fortification in the Vezzeno Valley. The manor, surrounded by Guelph battlements, is defended by towers, the entrance one with a drawbridge and the mighty central keep. The Castle of Gropparello, known in ancient times as "Rocca di Cagnano", is a characteristic example of a medieval fortification built to defend the access route to a valley, conceived as a true eagle's nest overlooking the cliff, and therefore absolutely unassailable .. The oldest document known so far about Gropparello dates back to the year 810, and is the deed with which the emperor Charlemagne granted the place as a fief to the then bishop of Piacenza Giuliano II.

The Riva castle is a fortified complex located in Ponte dell'Olio, in the province of Piacenza. It is so called as it is located in the district of the same name in the town, whose name derives, in all probability, from its proximity to the Nure stream; the castle was, in fact, built on the right bank of the stream to control the passage along the Nure valley. Its location, near the point where the Nure begins to flow into the Po Valley, was strategic as it allowed control of the passage towards the sea: via the Aveto valley towards Liguria and via the Taro valley towards Lunigiana.

The castle, mentioned in a sale deed of 1296, was built on a hill on the left bank of the Trebbia river, in front of Rivergaro, to control access to the valley together with the castles of Rivalta, Montechiaro and Rivergaro, located on the opposite bank. The castle has a rectangular plan with an internal courtyard and four cylindrical corner towers. Made of stones and pebbles from Trebbia, it is composed of three buildings and a single curtain wall, to the south, modified at the end of the 17th century with the addition of battlements and windows. The south-west corner tower has large Renaissance-style arched openings.

The mighty castle of Momeliano, made up of three rectangular bodies arranged on a U-shaped plan, is the result of two construction phases. The oldest nucleus dates back to the fourteenth century, the most recent one can be dated between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Over the centuries it underwent several changes of ownership, up to the Stevani family who, at the end of the nineteenth century, put much of the surrounding land under viticulture. The general state of conservation of the castle is good. Worth noting are: traces of the joints of the drawbridge in the building facing south-east; the battlements, now closed in an arch and accessible via a narrow corridor; the remains of the pointed arched windows walled up on the south-east front; the loggia towards the courtyard; two pairs of arches.

Rivalta Castle Among the castles in Italy that host the Dutch royal family, Rivalta Castle is where Princess Margaret of England also stayed. It is located in Emilia and is among the most beautiful tourist itineraries in Val Trebbia, a motorcyclist's paradise. You can see it on the right of state road 45, when before Rivergaro you start to climb towards Bobbio and Mount Penice and then dive towards Genoa and the sea. Today, thanks to the recovery and enhancement of the entire complex, the Rivalta Castle is a sumptuous residence. Surrounded today by a thick tree-lined garden, a sumptuous noble residence often chosen by the royals of England for a quiet, aristocratic holiday, the Rivalta Castle was, in times gone by, one of the most important military bastions of western Emilia.

Located under the town of Momeliano (not easy to identify, follow the first dirt road junction with the indications to the Luretta winery) is a beautiful castle whose existence is documented starting from 1368, although there are documents dating back to a first "version" to the 10th century, later destroyed by Guglielmo Landi in the early 1200s and rebuilt in the mid-1300s. Built in brick and stone, it has a U shape with four towers at the corners, three with a round base and one with a quadrangular base. The closed arched battlements are practicable with a narrow patrol path. Currently privately owned, it houses the cellars of the adjacent winery.
