This old town has lots of life. Shops, bars and restaurants but always respecting the old town vibe. I know this place almost over 30 years and nothing really has changed. of course bars have changed, but the vibe is absolutely the same. I love the town!

Hilly but well-paved section along the coast. Relatively little traffic

In 1292, the city was besieged by the Merinids from North Africa. They kidnapped the son of the commander of the fortress and threatened to kill him if his father did not give them the castle. But the latter, known as Guzmán El Bueno, refused and, if legend is to be believed, even threw his dagger down to the besiegers so that they could kill his son with it: he would rather be a man without a son than one without honor. The Spanish named the castle Castillo de Guzmán after him, which was further expanded at that time. Like other generals who had distinguished themselves during the Reconquista, he was rewarded with land. His descendants, the Dukes of Medina-Sidonia, were among the largest landowners in Andalusia until the 20th century and owned large parts of the province of Cádiz.
