Affectionately called the "little coffee mill" by the Palatinate people due to its shape, the Flaggenturm (flag tower) is considered the oldest observation tower in the Palatinate and a magnet for many visitors. Located between Bad Dürkheim and Wachenheim on the "Pfälzer Weinsteig" (Palatinate Wine Trail), it offers a magical view of the Rhine plain and the Palatinate Forest, including the Limburg Monastery ruins and the Bismarck Tower. The construction was financed in 1854 through donations from the residents of Bad Dürkheim. This made it a symbol of the growing prosperity of the flourishing spa town. The 10-meter-high, two-story, neo-Gothic sandstone tower rises 224 meters above the summit of the Fuchsmantel mountain. With its polygonal shape, the four pointed arch windows, formerly with colored glass, symbolized the seasons. A narrow external staircase leads to the 5.4-meter-high outdoor platform. Pinnacles provide orientation to prominent landmarks. Finally, a spiral staircase leads to the upper platform with a flagpole. Enjoy the view stretching from the Rhine to the Odenwald and Black Forest.
