The Willi Brandt memorial plaque hangs in Unkel, where he last lived. A lovely market square is perfect for a break, whether cycling or hiking.

The half-timbered house, built on a stone base, forms the backdrop for the small sacred monument standing in front of it. Its design is very typical: a rectangular base with a small niche at the bottom, capped by a shell-like ceiling. Above this base rises the cross, presenting the body of the crucified Christ to passing hikers and walkers. The dedicatory inscription names Stephen and Anna Riefferscheidt as the donors.

Today, only the foundations of the former ancestral home of the Lords of Breitbach remain. If you take a short break here, you will quickly realise how impressive the moated castle must have once been. It is also interesting that the foundations were only uncovered in 2008.

The bench is the perfect height to put the backpack down while standing. So it can stand on the bench while you unbuckle it. The view from here is great and you can eat, drink or rest your head at the table.. 😉
