The name "Rocca de 'Baldi" derives from the fact that the medieval village stands on a cliff overlooking the Pesio stream. To protect the small town, in the 12th century a noble of the Morozzo family began to build what has become the present castle.

The Torre Civica del Belvedere (or "Torre dell'Orologio", or "Torre dei Bressani") is one of the most famous points of Mondovì. Giovanni Battista Beccaria, in 1762, used the 29.1 meters of the bell tower for his experiments, managing from here to determine the meridian arc passing through Piedmont.
