Frassinoro is located in the upper Apennines, near the reserves of Monte Cusna, Alta Val Dolo and Alpesigola. The service road for the dam connects Romanoro and Lake Gazzano, in the narrow and high valley of the Dolo stream. It is closed to vehicular traffic and is now a beautiful dirt road ideal for gravel riding. Not suitable for racing bikes and fat tires are recommended due to the presence of some slightly rockier sections.

The Fontanaluccia dam is a large water structure located in the municipality of Frassinoro, in the province of Modena. It was built between 1923 and 1928 to produce electricity for the reclamation of the Po Valley. The water from the artificial lake is conveyed through an underground tunnel to the Farneta hydroelectric power plant.
