The climb to Colle del Melogno from Finale is one of the classics that lead from the Ligurian coast towards the hinterland. It measures about 15 kilometers, for a difference in altitude of 1000 meters. The slope is constant and pedalable, and the route winds first with glimpses of the sea, and then enters the suggestive Faggeta del Melogno.

The Central Fort of Melogno, a building built on the hill of the same name, is part of the defensive system located between the upper Val Bormida and the Finalese hinterland wanted by the Royal Army to defend Lower Piedmont and the Ligurian Apennine chain from land attacks from the coast Ligurian. It was built between 1883 and 1895.

The pass connects Orco Feglino via a dirt road and from here the town of Finale Ligure on the western Ligurian Riviera to the municipality of Mallare in Val Bormida. It lies on the watershed between the Po Valley and the Ligurian Sea. North of the pass rises the Biterno stream, a tributary on the right bank of the Bormida di Mallare; in the south, instead, the two source arms of the Aquila Current, the main tributary of the Pora, arise. The pass opens between the foothills of Pian dei Corsi (to the southwest) and Monte Alto (to the northeast). Source: Wikipedia

St. James Pass is located on the watershed between the Po Valley and the Ligurian Sea and was an important crossing point during the Middle Ages for travelers and merchants who went from Finale Ligure to Mallare. Here stands the Church of San Giacomo surrounded by numerous picnic tables and some brick barbecues. On the hill there is also a plaque dedicated to the soldiers who fought in the Napoleonic wars and a memorial that commemorates the partisans who died here at the hand of the Nazi-fascist troops during the Resistance.

The Melogno Central Fort was a defensive structure built to protect the so-called "Melogno barrier" near the hill of the same name. It was built between 1883 and 1895 at the behest of the Royal Army to defend Lower Piedmont and the Ligurian Apennine chain from potential land attacks from the Ligurian coast. The Melogno Central Fort was part of a defensive system that included the Tortagna and Settepani forts, and the Merizzo Fort.

The Colle di Melogno (1028 m asl), the scene of bitter fighting between Austria and France as early as 1795, and its fortress of the same name, built by the Italians in the 19th century, once played an important role as a strategic protection and defense zone. Today wonderful MTB tours start from here, which lead through the picturesque beech forests of Barbottina.
